Chapter 14

It took Isabel a while to get Pip out of his hiding spot, considering they had to make sure Westley wasn’t around to see it—and the thing was, they had no idea how long Westley lurked outside just out of viewing distance. The moment Rufus had most of the firewall on the right yard back to its normal state and hiding their presence, they were running for the castle, using a side window to shimmy in and rushing to the center. There, she knelt before Pip and gave in to the urge to wrap her arms around his body, feeling the boy stiffen for a few seconds before tentatively hugging her back.

“I’m glad you’re okay,” she said. “How long were you hiding in there?”

“A few hours.” Pip placed his head on her shoulder, basking in the offered comfort. “I heard the breach and found a lot of creatures inside, and then I found this one. I would’ve lured them outside, but…”

“You felt the demigod’s presence?”

“Not really, but I felt…a weird sense. Like I had to hide, but I didn’t know why. Father always told me to listen to my instincts.”

“You should. And you did.”

“My instinct was also to fight and kill trespassers—not the animals, because obviously someone ushered them in here. I wanted to find the culprit, but this little one…”

“You had to keep safe.”

Pip lifted his head, sadness spreading over his features as he nodded. “I tried to. But there must have been some kind of poison because it was already dying. I couldn’t keep it alive, but I couldn’t have those big creatures tearing at it, either. I was about to attack them, but then you guys came back.”

“I’m sorry for leaving you alone, Pip. We had to rescue a few of these creatures and bring them to a good home.”

The sadness cleared a bit, hope sparking. “So they’re alive? Wherever they have come from?”

Isabel nodded, not getting into details about the prison and Lizbeth’s home. “Yes. So don’t worry about them. I’m sad this one died, but I’m hopeful the rest will fare better.” She recalled the large creatures just freed, her heart close to breaking at the idea that they’d missed some prison cells—not at the back of that house but probably somewhere else. But at least they’d looked healthy, if distrustful. “And I’m glad you listened to your instincts and hid.”

She took the boy upstairs, waiting for him to finish a quick washing up before she checked for bruises. Thankfully, there were none, and they buried the dead creature at the back when the firewalls there were properly secured. Then she tucked Pip in bed, watching him struggle with something before he finally blurted it out.

“I wanted to fight.”

“Sometimes hiding produces better results, and this one did,” she assured.

“But I’m powerful already.”

“Not every powerful person has to fight all the time, Pip. And there will always be someone more powerful than us, so it’s best not to rush and jeopardize things. Victory’s always sweeter with the proper strategy, you know.
